Customer lists and cleanup for Shopify

Know which customers to win back, reward and offer to next.

MergeGuard is a Shopify app that counts each customer once across all their profiles. It builds your win-back, VIP, subscription and next-offer lists, merges duplicate profiles when you confirm or switch on automatic merging, and suggests fixes for mistyped emails.

Nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment. Merges are permanent.

  • Free plan with 25 merges, one time
  • Runs inside your Shopify admin
  • MergeGuard never messages your customers

Contact fixes

MergeGuard flags mistyped and throwaway emails. A mistyped one gets a suggested correction. When the corrected address already belongs to another customer, MergeGuard offers no fix. The row goes under Matches another customer, with Merge in Duplicates as the action. Throwaway addresses are flagged and never changed.

Automatic fixes cover domain typos only. Everything else waits for your review. Automatic fixes start on Scale.

Why Shopify won't merge these profiles

Profile B: Either of the customer profiles has, or has ever had, a subscription contract.

VIPs on profiles Shopify can't merge. Their profiles stay separate. Their spend still counts together.

MergeGuard can't bypass Shopify's rules and never merges a protected group automatically. The app offers Not a duplicate and no Merge.

Mark this group as not a duplicate?

It leaves your list. You can restore it from Marked not a duplicate.

What stays in your hands

Merges are permanent
MergeGuard saves a snapshot of each merged customer, and History records every merge.
Automation only where you allow it
Automatic merging stays off until you switch it on. Protected profiles are never merged automatically.
Marketing subscriptions follow the person
If any merged profile is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged customer is subscribed, as in Shopify's own merge.
Lists change nothing until you act
Audiences never unsubscribe or delete anyone, and syncing never changes consent.
Contact fixes wait for your approval
You approve each fix, apart from domain typos if you switch on automatic fixes.
Your customers hear nothing from us
MergeGuard never messages your customers.

It keeps working after the first clean-up.

Do I need MergeGuard if Shopify can merge?

If you have a handful of duplicates you can name, Shopify's own merge may be enough. It is included with Shopify and merges two profiles at a time. MergeGuard adds duplicate finding across the store, the evidence for each group, merges of a whole group with one confirmation, and lists that count people.

Questions merchants ask first

Does MergeGuard send campaigns or message my customers?

No. MergeGuard builds lists and never messages your customers. You send campaigns from your email platform. Shopify's help page says the customer isn't notified when their profiles merge.

Does it recommend products or predict who will cancel?

No. MergeGuard builds lists from how customers buy. The Subscription list in Audiences shows signs, such as buying their subscription product separately or skipping deliveries. What you offer, and to whom, is your decision.

Which plans include which Audiences?

Newsletter starts on Starter, VIP on Growth, and Win-back and Subscription on Scale. Enterprise includes everything in Scale, or more. A plan that doesn't include an audience still shows its counts.

Can a merge be undone?

No. Shopify merges are permanent. MergeGuard shows the evidence and the details the merged customer keeps before you confirm, saves a snapshot of each merged customer, and records every merge in History. History is a record of the change. It doesn't reverse a merge.

Does it work with Klaviyo?

Yes. MergeGuard syncs a list to Klaviyo only when you choose, and connecting Klaviyo never starts a sync on its own. On Growth, Scale and Enterprise you can also turn on Klaviyo profile merging, so the matching Klaviyo profiles merge after MergeGuard merges customers in Shopify. Klaviyo decides the merged profile's consent and suppression, and a Klaviyo merge can't be undone.

What happens to marketing subscriptions when profiles merge?

If any of the merged profiles is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged customer stays subscribed, the same as in Shopify's own merge. That's why every merge starts with evidence and your decision: your confirmation, or automatic merging you switched on for strong matches or groups that need your judgment.

Can MergeGuard merge customers that Shopify blocks?

No. MergeGuard merges through Shopify, so Shopify's rules apply. Groups Shopify won't merge show as protected profiles, with the Shopify blocker for each profile.

Do I need MergeGuard if Shopify can already merge?

If you have a handful of duplicates you can name, Shopify's own merge may be enough. MergeGuard adds duplicate finding across the store, the evidence for each group, group merges and lists that count people.

Every order on one customer.

Install MergeGuard for Shopify free and see which duplicate groups your store has. The Free plan includes 25 merges, one time. Nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment. Merges are permanent.
